Body odour can be a problem for many people, especially those who perspire easily. Most of the time, however, people tend to ignore or skirt around the issue. Islam encourages us to maintain cleanliness and good hygiene as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once said, “Cleanliness is half of faith.”[i] Good hygiene practices are important not only for your home and the environment, but also for a clean body that smells fresh and pleasant. Here are some simple yet effective ways to fight body odour:
1. Natural scrubs
Scrubbing the underarms is a good start to smelling fresh, and lemons make a great natural scrub. Rub a slice of lemon on the armpits to kill bacteria, the chief cause of body odour. Following this routine regularly will help maintain fresh and odour-free armpits. Lemon scrubs also help to brighten the skin.
2. Deodorants vs antiperspirants
Most of us may ask: Aren’t deodorants and antiperspirants the same? The answer is no. Deodorants help minimise body odour through the use of fragrance, but they do not block the production of sweat. On the other hand, antiperspirants reduce sweat production, thus eliminating odour straight from its source.
3. Choose breathable fabrics
A good way to stay smelling nice is to carefully select what you wear. Clothes that absorb sweat easily are a good choice. Try to look for breathable fabrics as they help keep the underarms dry. Loose-fitting clothing is also recommended as it allows better ventilation.
4. Use vinegar to neutralise bacteria
Bacteria is the main cause of body odour, and neutralising it will help you stay fresh. One way to do this is to apply a splash of vinegar on the underarms. Like lemons, vinegar will eliminate bacteria by neutralising it.
