The wisdom by the Holiness, Dalai Lama on life , rekindle a story which I have read a year ago and it really make a lot of sense if we think deeply and contemplate on it. Yes, it running in circles. From young, we are taught by our parents that we have to study hard to live a good life. We study hard from primary school , then secondary school, then high school and if we get a degree, we will home free and we will live happily ever after. We enter the rat race and work hard for the money at the expense of our health. Sometimes, we work day and night and night and day and in some cases 7x24. Our health suffers , we have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol , weak heart , weak legs, crooked fingers and becoming bald , old and ugly. We look beyond our age, eye sight fading , the joints croaking and we live in an apartment or house with little chance of seeing the daylight. Hopeless situation but yet we do not realize that we are doomed.
It is a pity sight and like the Dalai Lama said " we think we can live forever" . What a joke ? We wait and wait until we have enough money in the bank before we travel and until that time, we cannot even walk and eat. What is the use of travelling ? We travel in a wheel chair or when we reach a tourist spot, we just sit there to see the younger people walking around and enjoying themselves because we cannot walk . What an irony ? If we quiet down, we can visualize the picture and we know it is happening but we still gamble by waiting for a tomorrow. The tomorrow which may not come. Isn't this a risky gamble. So, folks , pack your bag and travel if it is your wish or slow down and watch your health. Be kind and fair to yourself.
Yes, about the story which have read a year ago, it is about a man living in a village by the sea. Every morning, he goes out to the sea and catch fish for his full day's meal. By afternoon, he will be sitting by the sea side , drinking beer and singing songs to pass his time. What a wonderful life? Then, came along a businessman from the big city with a big MBA in Economics. He told this fisherman that he could earn more money by catching more fishes and he can buy and employ more people to fish the whole day. Then , he can sell his fishes to the big city and really start a big business. It makes alot of sense. Then , he can start a private company and turn it into a public listed company doing millions of dollar sales and become a rich man in a few years time. Then, if he so wish, he can sell his business and take all the money to come back to the village live by the sea and have an easy life. The fisherman think for a while and ask the businessman , what is the difference between now and a few few years time when he come back as a rich man. He is still doing the same thing and enjoying himself. For all the riches after doing so many things, he may never come back again or he will come back will many illness and sickness. If it is going to be the same happy life he is enjoying now, why take the risk ? Things are more real now but the future is uncertain.
The morale of the story is happiness do not need to wait, it is up to us and it can happen any time. Once again, this is your choice and don't blame anybody for your indecision.
Namaste.
