Different religions may have different procedures of handling a dead body immediately after a person's last breath. I am not a expert in the matter and I just want to share my experience with all of you. There is no need to be scare of the subject and everyone have to die one day. I know some people is very scare of looking at a dead bodies or touch a dead body. It maybe a taboo or a personal belief or just scare the hell of it. You will be surprise, the face of the deceased is often very peaceful and serene.
In the old Chinese tradition, a dying person normally want to go back to his or her home to die. There is a saying " the old bird will return to its nest". So, the hospital normally will ask the loved ones of a dying person to sent the person home to spend their last days in the comfort of their own home or in the loving care of their loved ones if it is possible unless the person die unexpectedly when during treatment. At the hospital when the patient is having complications or stop breathing , the hospital will put them on oxygen and rush them back to their home so that they can die at home. The hospital believe that everyone would want to die in their own home. This belief came from ancient days when people live in houses instead of apartment or condos. However, this belief still holds but the wakes are conducted in commercial complexes nowadays.
What should we do if a person give out his or her last breath ? Some religion believe that we should use a handkerchief to cover their mouth to preserve the life force in their body and pull a blanket to keep the body warm. Otherwise, the body will become cold very fast because the blood circulation have stopped the whole body will stiffen. In Buddhism , it is believe that the body must not be moved for the next 8 hours as the dead person may still have conscious. In simple terms, they are not totally dead until a few hours later. After the 8 hours, the caretaker will moved in to change the dressing of the deceased according to the religious beliefs of the deceased person.
During this period, there will be a lot of confusion and suggestion among the loved ones as most of them do not have any idea or religious knowledge to handle the situation. Normally, the caretaker will tell them what have to be done. So, a skillful caretaker is a must to avoid any disputes or half baked advise.
In Chinese belief, the soul of the dead person is directionless and struggling and in the meantime, it will drift in transition for the next 49 days. What happen during the 49 days, it is up to the interpretation of the various religions and the experts in the theory of heaven and hell. The Christians have their own belief and the Muslims have their own interpretation.
As for me, when we are dead, that is the end of it. There are no feelings, no attachments , no pain, no nothing. Yes, there is nothing but the light force going back to its origin in the Universe. The centre of the light force is like a giant magnet giving out billions of light force to give life in different beings and when its purpose is done, it will pull it back to its centre.
This is just my belief and it has no intention to interfere with your beliefs. Everything come naturally and will go naturally in the natural evolution of life.
Namaste.
